Outdoor Adventure Series Danger & Delight: A History of Winter Recreation in the La Sal Mountains

  • Grand County Library 257 East Center Street Moab, UT, 84532 United States (map)

Eric Trenbeath, U.S. Forest Service Utah Avalanche Center forecaster, will give a presentation on winter recreation, past and present, in the La Sal Mountains, with a summary of how terrain, weather, and snowpack, create a high potential for avalanches in the range.  The talk will look at early efforts to pioneer the La Sal Mountains as a winter recreation destination, and a 1992 tragedy that left four skiers dead from an avalanche. Winter recreation in the modern era will also be discussed with a focus on backcountry skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling, as well as the advent of an "extreme sports" culture.
