WabiSabi Thrift Store General Operations Manager

WabiSabi Thrift Store in Moab, Utah is currently seeking a “General Operations Manager” whose goals will be to increase the store’s donation and processing capacity, optimize efficiency, and improve working conditions for our 10+ employees. Achieving these goals will include observation of current processes and facility layout, investigation of building projects to expand storage and reorganize processing areas, an in-depth look at job descriptions, payroll, and benefits, and the creation of an executable plan to improve all of the above. The General Operations Manager will report directly to the WabiSabi Board President.

Our ideal candidate will be a highly organized, systematic thinker who has excellent planning and implementation skills. The candidate would listen well, inspire trust, and strategically implement the recommended changes.

Key goals and responsibilities:

Learn entire day-to-day operations of thrift store through speaking with staff, working all positions, and observing merchandise flow from intake to sale or disposal.

Create a project plan including a budget and timeline for increasing donations and retail capacity, optimizing efficiency with goal of increasing retail sales as outlined in the WabiSabi Strategic plan. Advise on fundraising needs and strategies for project and implement plan as approved by Board of Directors.

Make recommendations to Board regarding human resource improvements that will stabilize staff turnover and improve workers’ job satisfaction. Implement recommendations as approved by Board of Directors.

Support Store Manager in day-to-day operations as needed through assisting with public relations, mission alignment, operational budget oversight, customer service strategies, volunteer management, community donations, and the voucher system.

Duties:

  • Liaison between office, board and store

  • Optimize operational efficiency

  • Analyze build-out potential and/or other possibilities to increase capacity and revenue potential

  • Oversee daily retail sales and operational budget

  • Manage and improve in store programs (i.e. vouchers, community donations)

  • Coordinate clothing and shoe recycling transportation (a.k.a. bulk)

  • Fundraise through grant writing for capital improvements

  • Assist Store Manager in adjusting back to front of house retail process for maximum efficiency, profitability, and resourcefulness

  • Educate public on WabiSabi operations, programs and impact

  • Manage public relations and customer service

  • Responsible for all property upkeep, maintenance, and repairs

  • Oversee management of Thrift Store Staff (10 - 12 people)

    • Facilitate a positive work environment and serve as a mediator

    • Recruite, hire and fire

    • Schedule employees’ work week

    • Identify training needs and coordinate professional development opportunities

Desired Skills and Previous Experience

  • Retail business experience

  • Experience working with nonprofits

  • Computer skills, including knowledge of QuickBooks, Microsoft Office, and social media.

  • Experience as a senior manager, project manager, or comparable position, which could include oversight of organizational operations, planning and managing programs and campaigns, managing staff, planning and managing a budget, etc.

  • Conflict resolution

  • Experience in fundraising that includes grant writing

  • Previous experience establishing and implementing organizational goals

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Position and Benefit Details

  • Full-time, 12-month position.

  • Evening and Weekend hours may be required for store operations and some events

  • Paid Time Off (PTO).

WabiSabi is a 501©3 nonprofit thrift store located in beautiful and remote southern Utah. Our mission is to receive, revalue, and redistribute needed resources to strengthen the Moab community. With the revenues from our store we support local nonprofits, fund small community oriented projects, as well as provide educational opportunities for nonprofit professional development and creative reuse workshops. Our donation stream enables us to donate free goods to over 80 community organizations as well as provide clothing and household goods to people and families in need.
